Isabel was like Mars going into battle. She stormed through the house, making her way to her brother’s study. Every servant she encountered practically ran in the other direction. She would not take her anger out on them, but she was thankful they moved out of her way and kept silent as she marched down the hall.

She didn’t knock. She didn’t care about proprieties anymore. She flung open the door to Benjamin’s study and slammed the door behind her.

“How dare you?” Her accusation flew through the room faster than a lightning bolt. Her hands shook violently as she repeated her accusation. “How dare you!” she screamed at the top of her lungs.

Weston’s head had snapped up. His mouth opened and closed. For once in his life, her brother was speechless.

“Is it not awful enough that you forced me to have a season?” Isabel put her trembling hand up to stop Weston from speaking. “Why did you have to humiliate me? Am I such a disappointment? Am I such a disaster at social functions?” Isabel realized what she was saying, and then added, “You don’t have to answer that last question.” She stepped further into the room. “Why?” The word came out more of a plea than a question.

Weston sucked in a long, deep breath and then on an even longer sigh said, “We thought you needed a little encouragement.”

“Encouragement? Had I not been going to every function that you arranged? We? I suppose Philippa was the mastermind behind the plan?” She knew her sister-in-law prided herself on her matchmaking skills, but this time she had gone too far.

“Philippa just wants you to be happy. We all want you to be happy. Tristram shares similar interests and we thought the two of you would suit.”

“Clearly we do not suit, otherwise Lord Trevena would not be leaving town.”

“Tristram is leaving?” Surprise echoed in Weston’s voice.

Isabel was not going to humiliate herself further by recounting her conversation with Lord Trevena. “What’s next? Are you going to force another one of your friends to pretend interest in me? Or are you just going to bribe someone to marry me?”

“Isabel, be reasonable…”

“No, I don’t have to. Not anymore. I don’t want to discuss this ever again. In fact, I don’t want to speak with you or anyone else at the moment.” Isabel knew she was being childish, but she didn’t care. The pain inside was growing to epic proportions. She had said what she wanted to say, and now she just wanted to be left alone. She swallowed the despair in her throat. “Do not interfere anymore.”
